A tragic helicopter crash in New York City’s Hudson River has claimed the lives of six individuals, including a Spanish family and their pilot.​

Incident Overview

On Thursday afternoon, a Bell 206 helicopter operated by New York Helicopter Tours crashed into the Hudson River near Hoboken, New Jersey. The aircraft had departed from the Wall Street Heliport and was en route to the George Washington Bridge when it lost its tail rotor and a main rotor blade mid-flight, leading to an inverted crash into the river. All six occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.

The victims include Agustín Escobar, CEO of Siemens Spain, his wife Merce Camprubí Montal, and their three children, aged 4, 5, and 11. The family was visiting New York to celebrate family birthdays. The pilot, Sean Johnson, a 36-year-old Navy SEAL veteran, also perished in the crash. ​

Investigation Underway

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation into the crash. Preliminary reports suggest mechanical failure as a potential cause, with witnesses reporting the helicopter breaking apart mid-air. The wreckage was recovered from the river by Thursday evening.
