India and Pakistan Clash After New Missile Strikes

Tension grows between India and Pakistan. On May 6, India carried out a missile attack on parts of Pakistan and the area of Kashmir it controls. India said the strikes were meant to stop groups they believes are behind a deadly attack that killed 26 tourists last month in the town of Pahalgam.
This new military action, called Operation Sindoor, hit nine sites. India said the sites were being used by fighters from groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. These groups have been linked to past attacks inside India.
Pakistan says the missiles hit homes and mosques, killing at least 31 people, including children. The country’s leaders have called the strikes an act of war. They say they are planning to respond.
India has not said how many missiles were used or what damage was done. But Pakistan claims it shot down five Indian planes and a drone during the event. India has not confirmed this.
‘Just Loud Noise and Fire’
A man living in Muzaffarabad, one of the areas hit by the missiles, told The Guardian, “It felt like the roof was falling in. We didn’t know what was happening, just loud noise and fire.”
Pakistan’s prime minister met with military and political leaders after the attack. He said Pakistan will decide how and when to strike back.
Other countries are now watching closely. The United States, China, the United Kingdom, and the United Nations have all said both sides need to stay calm. They request India and Pakistan to avoid more violence.
India and Pakistan have had a troubled relationship since 1947, especially over the Kashmir region. There have been wars and many smaller fights. Both countries have nuclear weapons, which makes this new conflict especially risky.
- Operation Sindoor: On May 6, India launched “Operation Sindoor,” targeting nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, which India identified as “terrorist infrastructure” linked to the April 22 attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 civilians.
- Casualties: Pakistan reported that the Indian missile strikes resulted in at least 31 deaths, including children, and 46 injuries.
- Pakistan’s Response: Pakistan condemned the strikes as an “act of war” and claimed to have shot down five Indian fighter jets and a drone.
- Cross-Border Shelling: Following the missile strikes, cross-border artillery exchanges intensified, leading to additional casualties on both sides.
- International Reactions: The United Nations, United States, China, Russia, and the United Kingdom have urged both nations to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue to prevent further escalation.
