People from around the world are remembering Pope Francis after his death at age 88. From candlelight vigils in New York to quiet prayers in small villages across Latin America, many are honoring the man who led the Catholic Church for over a decade. His impact reached far beyond Vatican City, touching communities of all faiths and backgrounds.

Global Ceremonies Reflect His Reach

The Vatican has planned official mourning events, beginning with a funeral service at St. Peter’s Basilica later this week. Meanwhile, churches in cities across Europe have opened their doors for quiet reflection. Large crowds filled the Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires, Pope Francis’s hometown, to light candles and say the rosary.

In Italy, church bells rang at noon on Monday in a symbolic gesture of unity. In Manila, Philippines, people held hands and sang hymns outside the cathedral. Many described him as a leader who listened and cared.

In New York City, hundreds gathered outside St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Fifth Avenue. They lit candles, left flowers, and stood in silence. Some prayed on the steps while others wrote messages in a book of condolence. Cardinal Timothy Dolan spoke briefly, saying, “Pope Francis gave many of us hope when we needed it most. His legacy will stay with the city of New York for years.”

One New Yorker, 19-year-old student Anthony Delgado, summed up his feelings simply: “He made us feel like the church cared again.”

Some other visitors came from out of town, like Maria Lopez from Jersey City. “I’m here because he made people feel seen,” she said. “Even those of us far from Rome felt close to him.”

A Lasting Legacy

The United Nations observed a moment of silence before Monday’s General Assembly session. Leaders from across the world, including President Trump and former U.S. Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama, expressed their condolences. French President Emmanuel Macron, released a public statement praising the pope’s focus on compassion and human dignity.

Although Pope Francis has passed, many say his ideas and efforts live on. His call for unity, simplicity, and action on global issues influenced more than just Catholic communities. People of many faiths respected his approach to leadership.

As the world prepares for the transition to a new pope, many continue to grieve. But they also celebrate the values Francis stood for.
