George Santos Fraud Sentence: Ex-Rep Sentenced to 87 Months
Former U.S. Representative George Santos was handed an 87-month prison term, marking the end of a controversial chapter in politics. The George Santos fraud sentence comes after he pleaded guilty to multiple federal charges, including wire fraud, identity theft, and theft of public funds.
Santos, 36, appeared emotional during his sentencing in a New York courtroom, where he admitted he betrayed the trust of voters and supporters during his 2022 campaign. “I cannot rewrite the past,” Santos told the judge. “But I can control the road ahead.”
U.S. District Judge Joanna Seybert, who presided over the case, criticized Santos for continuing to lie even after his arrest. She noted that while he earned money through podcasts and other media, he didn’t set aside any funds to repay victims. Santos must now pay $373,000 in restitution and report to prison by July 25.

The sentence follows a dramatic fall from grace. Once a rising figure representing parts of Long Island and Queens, Santos was expelled from Congress in 2023 after a House Ethics Committee report uncovered more misconduct.
Prosecutors explained that Santos stole money and identities and lied repeatedly about his background and finances. They argued he built a false image to win public office and then used that role to enrich himself.
“He rose to one of the highest offices in the land on a wave of lies,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Harris.
Defense attorneys pushed for a lighter, two-year sentence. They claimed Santos came from a troubled home and created a version of himself to survive. The court, however, sided with prosecutors, stating that the damage done was too severe for leniency.
